Free VIN check: what is genuinely free, and what is not

A legit free VIN check gives you the government data: the build decode, recall campaigns, complaints and crash ratings. Title, mileage and accident history come from records that cost money to compile, which is why no honest site gives them away.

What you can check for free

Our free VIN lookup covers the first two rows in one step: it decodes the VIN through vPIC and lists the recall campaigns NHTSA has on file for that make, model and year, with no account and no payment details.

Recalls are the free check most people skip

Of the 2,961 VINs we have decoded, 2,151 (72.6%) belong to a make, model and year with at least one NHTSA recall campaign. The average was 4.95 campaigns and the highest was 33.

3 to 5 campaigns64721.9%
6 to 10 campaigns36112.2%

A campaign on file does not mean the car still needs the repair. Use NHTSA's recall search on the exact VIN to see whether a remedy is still outstanding, and ask the seller for the dealer paperwork if it was done.

What a free VIN check cannot include

History data that costs money to compile
WhatWhere it comes from
Title brands (salvage, flood, rebuilt, lemon)NMVTIS title data via approved providers
Odometer readings over timeTitle transfers, inspections, service records
Reported accidents and damagePolice reports, insurers, repair shops
Number of owners and salesTitle and registration events
Liens, auctions and fleet or rental useLenders, auctions, fleet records

These records sit with state title agencies, insurers, auctions and repair shops. The federal title database, NMVTIS, is only available through approved data providers, who pay for access. That is the main reason a full history report has a price.

How to tell a legit free VIN check

  1. It shows the decode before asking for anything. If the year, make and model are hidden behind an email or card form, the check is not free.
  2. It names its sources. Look for NHTSA, NMVTIS or NICB by name.
  3. It does not promise free title or accident history. Pages that do are usually a teaser that ends at a checkout.
  4. It does not need your personal details. A VIN check needs a VIN, not your phone number.
  5. Paid reports say up front what they cost. An honest paid report shows the price before you enter payment details.

Run the free NHTSA decode

About the data

Figures on this page come from the NHTSA data mycarneedsthis.com stores, as of 2026-10-25: 2,961VINs decoded through NHTSA's vPIC service between 2026-03-22 and 2026-10-24, and recall and complaint counts for 11,470make, model and year combinations pulled from NHTSA's recallsByVehicle and complaintsByVehicle APIs. The decoded VINs were collected to build our vehicle pages, so they lean toward recent model years and are not a random sample of cars on the road.

Recall counts are campaigns NHTSA lists for a make, model and year. They do not tell you whether a specific VIN has been repaired. Counts are matched on NHTSA's model names, so a model sold under a different name can be undercounted.
