There are a lot of parts on your vehicle to maintain. And as a result, it can be easy to forgot about certain maintenance measures, especially preemptive maintenance. Don’t worry: we totally understand that.
One bit of maintenance that is regularly overlooked is cleaning a car’s fuel injectors. It’s easy to forget to take care of your fuel injectors because you can’t see them, so, unlike a worn tire, you don’t notice when they need attention. Furthermore, a lot of drivers aren’t familiar with what fuel injectors are, so they don’t notice the warning signs when the injectors are dirty, the way they’d notice when their brakes are starting to fail.
But fuel injectors shouldn’t be neglected. They need to be cleaned as part of routine maintenance. There are two ways to clean fuel injectors: with fuel injector cleaners, and with an off-car cleaning. We’ll break down the pros and cons of each method, but first, let’s take a closer look at fuel injectors.
What are fuel injectors?
Fuel injectors are the link between your car’s fuel system, and the engine. For your car to run properly, a combination of fuel and oxygen must be injected into the engine, where they are compressed and combust, which creates the power for your vehicle.
Fuel injectors are responsible for spraying the fuel into the combustion chamber. Fuel from the gas tank is pumped to the fuel injectors (each car has numerous injectors), where it is then sprayed into the combustion chamber so that the car can keep running. Without fuel injectors, the engine would have no way of getting fuel, and the car wouldn’t start, let alone run.
Why do fuel injectors need to be cleaned?
Over time, fuel injectors get dirty. Dirt, dust, and other contaminants in the fuel system are introduced to the injectors, and, even more dangerously, carbon deposits build up in the system and on the injectors. When the fuel injectors get dirty, they begin to get clogged, which inhibits their ability to effectively spray fuel into the engine.
When this happens, the engine will get an inconsistent amount of fuel, as well as an insufficient level of fuel. An engine is a carefully timed machine, and messing with the fuel intake throws the whole system out of whack. An improper fuel to oxygen ratio will result in the car getting worse gas mileage, and losing much of its power. Inconsistent and insufficient levels of fuel will make it difficult for the engine operate smoothly, and as a result, the driving feel will suffer. The car will hesitate and sputter when trying to accelerate, will make disconcerting noises, and will have a hard time idling, and sometimes stall.
These issues not only make the car more difficult to drive, but put excess stress on the engine and fuel system, which can lead to more serious problems down the road. That increases repair costs, while decreasing the resale value of the vehicle.
What’s the difference between fuel injector cleaners and off-car cleaning?
There are two different ways to clean your car’s fuel injectors: by using fuel injector cleaners, and by off-car cleaning. While these two techniques are very different, they’re both relatively simple and easy to understand.
Fuel injector cleaners are additives that you add to your fuel tank occasionally. The cleaner then mixes with the fuel in your car, and is run through the entire system as your car burns the fuel. For as long the cleaner is in the tank, it will be run through the fuel injectors. As it does, the additive will break down and dissolve the contaminants and carbon build ups that are clogging the fuel injectors, while cleaning the other elements of the fuel system as well.
Off-car fuel injector cleaning is a standard auto shop repair. A mechanic removes the fuel injectors from the vehicle, cleans them thoroughly by hand, and then re-installs them. Both of these approaches to cleaning fuel injectors work, so why choose one over the other? Let’s take a look at the benefits and downsides of each method.
The benefits of fuel injector cleaners
Fuel injector cleaners are the more popular of these two methods for cleaning fuel systems. The primary reason for this is simply because they’re so convenient and easy to use. Fuel injector cleaners can be purchased nearly anywhere: at auto parts stores, at gas stations, at superstores, or online. They come at a pretty affordable price – usually between $10 and $20 per treatment – and they’re easy to apply. In most cases, you simply take the fuel injector cleaner, pour it into your car’s fuel tank, and then fill your car up with gas. And that’s all you have to do! From an ease of use and practicality standpoint, it’s about the best automotive maintenance that you’ll ever encounter.
Because of this convenience, fuel injector cleaners not only save you money and hassle, but also time. You don’t have to plan for using a fuel injector cleaner, or take your car anywhere special. You don’t need to leave it with anyone. The process only takes a minute or two, and then the work is done while you drive. Many people avoid automotive maintenance tasks because of the time required, but that’s not an issue when using fuel injector cleaners.
One of the other main benefits of fuel injector cleaners is that they usually do a lot more than just clean the fuel injectors. Each fuel injector cleaner is different, and you should always check the labels when purchasing a product to see exactly what you’re getting, but most fuel injector cleaners offer a host of services in addition to cleaning the fuel injectors. The bulk of fuel injector cleaners are fuel system cleaners, which means that they help clean the fuel tank, fuel valves, and fuel filters as well, and often the combustion chambers as well. Many fuel injector cleaners double as fuel stabilizers, which help remove water from the fuel, rejuvenate stale fuel, and keep fuel fresh if you leave your car sitting around for a long amount of time.
A large number of fuel injector cleaners also increase the lubrication in your engine, which is a big added benefit. Fuel injector cleaners for vehicles with diesel engines also increase lubricity of the fuel, making sure that the engine runs smoother and more safely.
Finally, because fuel injector cleaners are affordable and easy to use, it makes them great for preventative maintenance. Rather than waiting until your vehicle is experiencing issues that you want to get rid of, you can simply use fuel injector cleaners every few thousand miles to help keep serious fuel system issues from occurring in the first place. That, in our mind, is the best type of maintenance.
The downsides of fuel injector cleaners
While fuel injector cleaners have a lot of positives, there are a few negatives, as well. Even though fuel injector cleaners are convenient and easy to use, you still have to do a little bit of work. You have to choose the fuel injector cleaner you want, purchase it, and then add it to the car yourself. For a lot of people, they’d rather just drop their car off at an auto shop or a dealership, and let someone else deal with the work.
Fuel injector cleaners are excellent as a preventative measure, but can occasionally struggle once there’s an established issue. If you have very dirty fuel injectors, using a fuel injector cleaner will always help, but it won’t always eliminate the issue. And if damage has already occurred elsewhere in the fuel system or engine, the fuel injector cleaner won’t be able to help with that.
If you’re going to use fuel injector cleaners, you’ll want to use them with some regularity. That can be a little bit of a hassle for some people, who prefer to have one trip to the shop or dealership over frequent stops for maintenance. And finally, while fuel injector cleaners do do a really good job of cleaning fuel injectors, and the rest of the fuel system, no additive can ever do as good of a job as a thorough cleaning by a mechanic.
The benefits of off-car fuel injector cleaning
There are a lot of benefits to taking your vehicle to an auto shop or a dealership to have a mechanic clean the fuel injectors. The biggest positive, however, is very simple: off-car fuel injector cleaning is very thorough, and absolutely gets the job done.
When an automotive technician cleans your fuel injectors, they’ll remove the injectors from the vehicle. The injectors will be cleaned – incredibly thoroughly – before being installed back into the car’s fuel system. As you can imagine, this results in a highly successful cleaning, and it’s something that can’t be matched by an additive, even the best ones. An off-car fuel injector cleaning returns to the fuel injectors to like-new status.
Another benefit of off-car fuel injector cleaning is that the mechanic will test the fuel injectors to make sure they’re functioning properly. That way, if serious damage has occurred to the fuel injectors, they’ll be replaced, rather than simply cleaning and prolonging the issue. Mechanics put fuel injectors through a series of tests before installing them back into the fuel system, ensuring that they’re in perfect condition before sending you on your way. That gives you comfort, and can save money down the road.
It’s not just the fuel injectors that are checked, however. While a technician is removing the fuel injectors from your car’s fuel system, they’ll be able to check the rest of the system. Any issues with the fuel tank, fuel filter, fuel pumps, or fuel valves will likely to be noticed and addressed. Simply put, having a human under your car, inspecting the fuel system during cleaning, provides a lot of value.
Off-car fuel injector cleaning also doesn’t need to be done with much regularity. You can usually go at least 30,000 miles between trips to the mechanic for a fuel injector cleaning, and being able to drive for that long without thinking about your fuel system is certainly a nice luxury to have. There is also, of course, the luxury and comfort of knowing that a professional is working on your vehicle.
Because off-car injector cleaning offers the strongest cleaning possible for fuel injectors, you’ll be able to get the most out of your fuel system. Off-car cleaning will restore the fuel mileage and horsepower in your vehicle to the levels that they had when the car first came off the lot. Long story short, you’re going to get the most out of your vehicle.
The downsides of off-car fuel injector cleaning
The biggest negative of taking your car to a mechanic for an off-car fuel injector cleaning is that you have to take it to a mechanic. That takes time out of your day, in addition to the hassle of scheduling. But, most importantly, it costs money to have your car worked on by an automotive technician. Off-car fuel injector cleaning isn’t a particularly expensive act of maintenance, but it’s still a lot more money than buying a cheap additive and adding it yourself.
Off-car fuel injector cleaning also focuses almost exclusively on your fuel injectors (unless you’re paying extra money for a full fuel system service). While a mechanic will let you know if they find something else wrong with your car or your fuel system, they’re there to clean your fuel injectors, not the other parts of the system. Whereas fuel injector cleaners also help clean the fuel tank, fuel filter, fuel pump, and fuel valves, an off-car fuel injector cleaning is only going to clean the fuel injectors. You want more cleaned, then you pay more money, simple as that.
And, to that point, many of the other benefits of fuel injector cleaners (like added lubrication and fuel stabilization) aren’t included when you pay a mechanic to clean your fuel injector cleaners.
So, what service is best?
As you can see, there’s a lot of benefits, and a few downsides, to both fuel injector cleaners and off-car fuel injector cleanings. For both services, the pros far outweigh the cons, so you can’t really go wrong with either service. Ultimately, it’s a matter of what works best for you; after reading this article, you should have a good idea of what makes each service great, as well as the hesitations for each. Armed with that information, you should be able to find the method that most closely aligns with your maintenance philosophies.
We usually opt for the convenience of fuel injector cleaners, and use them as a preventative measure. If we start to notice the symptoms of dirty fuel injectors, then we head to a mechanic for a thorough, off-car injector cleaning.
Cleaning your fuel injectors may be overlooked by many, but it shouldn’t be. This is a key part of automotive maintenance, and one that you shouldn’t ignore. Cleaning your fuel injectors will increase the horsepower in your vehicle, as well as the gas mileage. It will give your car a much better driving feel, keep it from hesitating and stalling, and keep the fuel system and engine healthier.
As you can see, the use of fuel injector cleaners, and off-site fuel injector cleaning are both great methods for fuel system maintenance. There’s no right method; as long as you’re taking care of your car’s fuel injectors, then all is well.
