Buyers Guide and Top Five Accessories for the Fiat 500e

Most Fiats are small, and the 500e is no exception. This is a very small car, meant for short drive around the city, commuting efficiently, and fitting into any parking spot possible. For the most part, that’s exactly what the 500e accomplishes.

The first and, currently only electric vehicle from Fiat does almost everything we’ve come to expect from a Fiat, but electric. The 500e has a driving range of 84 miles – not exactly enough to make you consider taking a road trip, but plenty enough for use as a daily driver for most people. This isn’t the most popular electrical vehicle, but it’s certainly quirky, fun, unique, and lovable.

Interesting and unique features for Fiat 500e buyers and owners

Let’s start with the big one. The 500e was meant to abide by California’s zero emissions laws, and as a result, the car actually costs the company money, as weird as that sounds. The 500e was created more out of necessity than desire or potential, and unfortunately it shows across certain parts of the vehicle.

But the biggest impact of that is that the 500e is only available in California and Oregon. So if you live in one of the 48 other states, or Washington D.C., then move along, there’s nothing to see here. This car isn’t in your future, so you might as well look at other electric vehicles.

For that reason, and because the car costs well over twice as much as it’s gasoline-powered brother, means the 500e is not a particularly common vehicle. But it’s still a good one.

The batter in the 500e is a mixed bag. When plugged into a 240 volt power source, it takes only four hours for this little Fiat to be fully charged. That’s the good news. The bad news is that if you only have a 120 volt power source, it will take a full day to charge the vehicle, just for the small range of 84 miles. That’s less than ideal.

With 500e, what you see is what you get. Unlike many electric vehicles, there are virtually no options for buyers to choose from. There are a few small, affordable options, but the car and the price don’t really fluctuate much.

Something that Fiat does really well is the navigation system. This system features maps and routes based on your range, so you know where you can go with the battery charge you have. It’s a great feature that works really, really well.

Before purchasing a 500e, potential buyers should know just how small it is. The car is meant for short trips not just because of the range: the legroom and head room are very minimal, so it’s not exactly a comfortable vehicle. The flip side is that the car is small, but still has a generous 147 lb-ft of torque, which make the car quite zippy. It really is a fun vehicle to drive, which is important to us.

Maintenance tricks and important information

The 500e doesn’t require much as far as maintenance is concerned. It’s recommended that the tires be rotated every 10,000 miles, but the first scheduled maintenance and inspection isn’t until 20,000 miles. Fiat also offers free maintenance for the first three years or 36,000 miles, and given the limited range, that likely means that you get three years of complimentary maintenance, which is a great thing.

Occasionally the software in this electric vehicle will require an update. When this happens, you’ll need to take the 500e to the dealership for a quick (and free) update, to make sure that everything functions optimally.

Tech-centric owners will want to know just how much you can do through the Fiat app. You can control a lot of the car’s features, including the horn and the climate controls, all through the app on your smart phone or tablet. You can also start of stop charging, and check in to see how charged the battery is. That’s great stuff that makes owning the vehicle easier and more convenient.

Owners should beware that the battery pack and all of the electric hardware really take up what should be trunk space and leg room in the rear seat. We already mentioned how cramped it is for the driver, but it’s even worse for the rear passengers and whatever you plan on putting in the trunk. There simply isn’t much room available.

The car also features a one-speed transmission, which is a little unique. This is up some people’s alleys, and not up other people’s. It doesn’t make much of a difference in this car, but it’s noteworthy for gearheads.

Top 5 accessories for the Fiat 500e

The 500e may not have a lot of options out of the dealer, but that shouldn’t keep you from customizing it and making it yours. The best way to do that is with some cool accessories that will help you get the most out of this little car. Here are our five favorite accessories for the Fiat 500e.

All Weather Floor Mats

Floor mats may not be the sexiest addition to a car, but they’re definitely one of the most important accessories that you can get. The 500e is a cute and fashionable car. It has a cool design, and comes in fun, upbeat colors. One way that you can quickly ruin the fun and stylish vibe of the car is by messing it up inside with dirt, mud, and grime. A strong set of all-weather floor mats can help keep the interior of your car clean.

These products feature three layers, and are designed brilliantly. They are strong, durable, and waterproof, yet they don’t dig into the floor of the car and risk damaging the vehicle. They’re a fashionable looped fiber finish (available in three colors), which looks better than most of the all weather floor mats out there, which are usually rubber.

The design is made to trap and contain spills, and it does so brilliantly. As such, spilling your drink in the car is not the hassle that it once was. And despite not being made out of rubber, these all weather mats are really easy to clean, which is helpful. They’re also easy to install, and are designed to perfectly fit the 500e. The fit is snug, which helps the mats stay in place, and look their best. They’re also not slippery at all, so they’ll stay in place while you’re entering, exiting, and driving your car.

A foam layer helps these floor mats last for a long time; it will take years before you notice any wear from feet in these mats. The foam also provides a sound barrier to help keep road noise down; add that to the quiet battery of the 500e, and you can have a nearly soundless ride.

Carbon Fiber Embossed Pattern Floor Mats

If you want to opt for a slightly more exciting product, don’t worry: we’ve got you covered. These carbon fiber embossed pattern floor mats are a fun, sleek, and sexy alternative to the all weather floor mats that we just discussed.

The Fiat 500e is a stylish car. And if you want to maintain the sport feel of it, these carbon fiber floor mats are the way to do that. Carbon fiber is one of the most popular materials in race cars, because of its strength and minimal weight. And because of its use, it has connotations with style and speed. Long story short, these floor mats look awesome, and add an extra zip of flash and fashion to your Fiat.

But they’re also very practical. The non-stick design makes the floor mats stick to the floor of the car so that they don’t move around when your feet do. The three-layer construction makes for a floor mat as strong as it is stylish, and the material is very protective of your vehicle. They’re easy to use, easy to install, and easy to remove.

They’re also based on performance. The material is supportive under your feet, and keeps you ready to drive at your best and most alert, all while remaining very comfortable.

These floor mats have all the practicality of a set of all weather mats, but they add style to the joint. If you want to improve the health of your 500e’s interior, while maintaining the awesome sporty feel of the car, then these are probably perfect for you.

Electric Vehicle Charging Station

Every electric vehicle needs a charging station. The nice thing about the Fiat 500e is that it only takes about four hours to fully charge the vehicle, assuming you’re using a 240 volt power supply.

This charging station from JuiceBox is one of our favorite ones available. This is a high power, 40 amp charging station that can be mounted indoors or outdoors. The 24-foot cable allows you to place it wherever is convenient, and still charge your car wherever you are parked. You need to install a 14-50R outlet in order to get this charging station up and running, but that’s a relatively easy task, and you can hire an electrician to do it for you for a very low price.

But the shining star of this charging system, and the reason why we love it so much, is because it is WiFi enabled, and you can control everything from a distance. Using a smart phone app, a tablet app, or your Amazon Echo, you can turn on the charging, turn off the charging, set a schedule for the charging, and monitor the energy. It removes so much of the hassle of charging the battery in your car, and also allows you to avoid peak rates when charging.

The charging station comes with a quick release aluminum mounting bracket. This allows you to mount the station on your wall, but also easily remove it if you want to take it with you. Long story short, this is a great charging station with a lot of amazing features, and it would work great with anyone’s 500e.

Fiat EV Charging Station

If you prefer to keep things stylish and on brand, then this is the charging station with your name on it. This charging station, which is constructed by AeroVironment, is the official charging station for Fiat and the 500e. Not only is this charger approved by Fiat, but it’s designed to match the Fiat design style. The cute and stylish design cues (complete with the Fiat logo) fit perfectly with Fiat’s aesthetic, so the charging station looks perfect next to a 500e.

First things first: this charging station has undergone thorough testing, and meets all the industry standards for safety. That’s highly important with electrical matters. It charges five times more quickly than the standard charging cables. It’s wall mounted, and takes up minimal space, and the 25-foot cable allows you to reach your car wherever you’re parked.

But above all else, these are simply battle tested. This charging station comes with a three year warranty, but we can almost guarantee that you won’t need to use it. It’s durable, long-lasting, and always gets the job done. The charging is quick, the indicator lights are simple and clear, and this is as safe of a charging station as exists.

Still, we keep coming back to the design. There’s something to be said about continuity in style. If you have a garage with the ultra stylish 500e, and a matching Fiat charging station, you’ll get pretty excited every time you go to get into your car. And we’ll be more than a little jealous.

Rain Sun Visors

These might seem simple, but we can’t tell you how awesome they actually are. These rain sun visors go on your side view mirrors. They keep rain off of the mirrors when it’s wet out, so that you don’t lose vision. And they keep the mirrors shaded, so you don’t get a horrible glare from the sun. In other words, they help you drive safely, which is always important.

But these rain sun visors go above and beyond the norm. They’re designed for the Fiat 500 and 500e, so they fit the mirrors perfectly. They don’t look like much on their own, but when added to the side mirrors of the 500e, they provide some smooth, subtle lines, and added character. They look great!

The production quality is also excellent. Most rain sun visors are flimsy and poorly made, and feel like they’re going to break or fall off at any time (and they usually do). These visors are the opposite: strong, sturdy, and built to last. They also protect from the sun far better than your average visors do.

The Fiat 500e is all about practicality. The purpose of the car is to be as practical as possible, from the size, to the electric power, to the safety. These visors only add to that practicality, by making it easier and safer to drive in rain or in shine.

Conclusion

The Fiat 500e isn’t a very popular electric car, for a lot of reasons. It’s only available in California and Oregon, it has a limited range, it’s very small, and it might be a little overpriced.

But it’s still a fantastic car, that doesn’t require any gasoline to get you from Point A to Point B. It’s zippy, fun to drive, and very stylish. It’s simply a fun car to have, whether you’re looking at it in the garage, parking it in a tiny space, or whipping it around a corner.

Add to it some of these accessories, and you’ll be one happy car owner. Have fun driving!
