Buyers Guide and Top Five Accessories for the Chevrolet Bolt

Posted: February 1, 2018

The Chevrolet Bolt is considered by many to be the top electric vehicle in the United States, when all factors are considered. The Bolt is a wildly impressive model, that offers an EPA-estimated 238 miles on a single charge. Despite that strong range, the Bolt starts at just under $30,000, when accounting for the electric vehicle federal tax credit.

This excellent Chevy car earned a perfect five-star rating from Car and Driver, which is no small feat. It’s no wonder this car is so popular: it has a great range, a great price, and is a blast to drive. It’s everything anyone looks for in a practical, everyday driver electric vehicle.

Interesting and unique features for Chevy Bolt buyers and owners

The Bolt became the first car to be fully electric, and have a range exceeding 200 miles. That’s quite a feat! But Chevy didn’t settle for simply being the first; they also wanted to be the best, and there’s a case to be made that that’s exactly what they accomplished.

One of our favorite “features”, if you can call it that, is how the Bolt doesn’t really feel like an electric vehicle. In fact, if we didn’t know that the Bolt was fully electric, we likely wouldn’t have guessed that it was. It looks like a normal car, eschewing the funky design that many electric vehicles have. It drives like a car with a gasoline engine, in the best way.

Chevy also has a cool website they designed to help soothe the concerns of worried buyers. Many people are concerned with whether or not an electric car will work for them, and Chevy made it a priority to address those concerns, which is great.

But our favorite feature is the steering wheel brake. The steering wheel has a paddle that you can use to handle braking. This paddle converts energy into electricity, that goes back into the battery, and keeps the car running for the longest time possible. Pretty nifty if you ask us!

Maintenance tricks and important information

We’ve already been singing the praises of the Chevy Bolt, but here’s where it gets even better. There’s pretty much nothing about this vehicle that requires maintenance. Chevy suggests that you bring the car to the dealership for maintenance every 7,500 miles, but that’s merely so the tires can be rotated. Every third maintenance trip (every 22,500 miles), the cabin air filter should be replaced, a cheap, quick, and easy repair that you can do yourself if you prefer.

There’s only one big piece of maintenance that Chevy requires: a coolant flush. And that coolant flush is required . . . wait for it . . . every 150,000 miles. Yup, you read that right: every 150,000 miles.

Other than that, the car is practically fool proof. Of course, you’ll still need some basic car maintenance, like replacing your tires and your brake pads. But when it comes to maintenance, you’re going to have a hard time finding a vehicle that requires less than the Chevy Bolt. And if you do find one, please let us know immediately so we can check it out.

As with many electric vehicles, it’s worth noting that the faster you drive, the more quickly you run out of batter in the Bolt. So while it’s a fun to drive car that encourages you to hit a back road and have a blast, be warned that your range will be limited. That said, most users have reported getting far more than the estimated 238 miles on a single charge when driving moderately.

But even if you’re driving fast on a freeway commute, you’ll come near 200 miles, which should be plenty enough for anyone with a commute. It’s a mighty impressive range. Chevy doesn’t have as many charging stations as a company like Tesla (but then again, who does?), so you need to plan your trips accordingly if you’re going to exceed the range. You will also need to purchase the Combined Charging System (CCS) port that allows the Bolt for fast-charging capabilities. With this feature, you can add 90 miles of range in about 30 minutes. That’s pretty good, albeit not great.

There’s still a ways to go before electric vehicles can be relied on for trips and long drives the way gasoline cars can. But the Chevy Bolt is a huge step in the right direction. Between the range, the charging port and stations (more than 1,000 across the country), and the price, this is a great option for any driver, even those who are planning some longer trips in the future.

Top 5 accessories for the Chevy Bolt

This is a great car right out of the dealership. Even if you purchase it with no added options, the Bolt is awesome from the moment it leaves the lot. But as with all vehicles, you can make the Bolt even better by accessorizing. Here are our five favorite accessories for the Chevy Bolt.

10.2 Inch Navigation Protective Film

For such an affordable car, the Chevy Bolt has a really nice navigation system. It’s very clear, has a great interface, and at 10.2 inches, is a pretty nice size. We’ve been really impressed by this navigation system, but that’s just the Bolt for you: everything is impressive!

But if you have a nice navigation system, it’s key to have nice protection for that system. We’re big fans of protective film for navigation systems, especially for good ones. This protective film really gets the job done, and is perfect for the Bolt.

The specifications are mighty impressive. This protective film is crafted out of an imported glass material that uses nanotechnology and laser cutting to perfectly fit the Chevy Bolt screen. It’s also a hard and durable film, that is anti-explosion. This gives you some peace of mind, since the last thing you want to worry about is glass shards in the interior of your vehicle.

It also is ultra absorbent, to keep your navigation screen from absorbing liquids and greases that could have a detrimental impact. Add in the anti-scratch feature, and you can be sure that this durable film will be with you for a long time.

When you hear all of that, you might think that this protective film would be too thick to use. But that’s not the case at all, as it maintains a thin depth that makes the touch screen work just as well as when the navigation screen is unprotected.

Rubber Floor Mats and Cargo Liners

Rubber floor mats and cargo liners are a must have for almost any car. But they’re especially important for a car like the Chevy Bolt. The Bolt is a fun, cool new car. The last thing you want to do when getting an exciting and practical daily driver is go and get it dirty. So floor mats and cargo liners to keep your car clean are a must; that way, you’ll stay in love with your Bolt.

This set of floor mats and cargo liners is great. They fit the Bolt well, and they’re very easy to remove. Made out of rubber, these floor mats and cargo liners can be sprayed down with a hose to clean off all of the dirt, grime, and mud that you track into your vehicle. As soon as the floor mats and cargo liners are dry, just throw them back in the car, which will only take you a few seconds, and you’re good to go again.

These floor mats and cargo liners are all weather. They won’t get funky if you leave your car sitting in the baking sun, and they can deal with snow and ice like it’s nothing at all. The rubber polymer is highly durable, but also extremely flexible, which is the perfect combination.

These products also utilize a high ridgeline and nibbed backing that helps prevent slipping. So you don’t need to worry about losing your balance getting in and out of your vehicle and stepping on the floor mats. Add in the fact that they look really nice, and won’t stand out in the Bolt, and you’ve got a perfect, practical addition to your exciting new car.

Level 2 EV Charger

It goes without saying that a charger is one of the most important accessories for anyone who owns a fully electric vehicle. This amazing model from EV Gear is the perfect entry level battery charger for the Chevy Bolt.

Compared to most battery chargers, this charger is incredibly affordable. That might make you think that it’s not very good quality, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. This is a terrific quality charger, that really gets the job done, and will get your Bolt back to it’s 238 mile range reliably and efficiently.

This charger is a Level 2, 240 volt charger, that will fully charge the Bolt in about 11 or 12 hours. But it’s also adaptable. The charger works with every model of electric vehicle, and has an adaptor for Level 1, 120 volt charging. So if you have multiple electric vehicles, or you have friends who park their electric vehicles at your home, then this is an ideal model, as you’ll be able to charge anything, anytime.

What we love most is the 30-foot charging cable. That makes this charger ridiculously easy to use, as you can plug it in anywhere in your garage and reach your car. You can often even charge your Bolt without parking it in the garage! That’s a great luxury.

This product also comes with a very handy control box, as well as a three-year warranty. Long story short, if you want a strong, fast, and reliable charger for your Bolt, but don’t want to pay top dollar, this product has your name written all over it.

Home 32A Electric Vehicle Charger

Of course, if you want to spend a bit more and get a borderline flawless battery charger, then we won’t hold it against you. If you can afford to do that, it’s the way to go. And we recommend this incredible home charger from ChargePoint.

Let’s get right to the good stuff. This hardwired charger can fully charge your Bolt in under four hours. That is remarkable. If you drive a lot, and need to be able to get back in your car quickly after running the battery low, then this is a dream product.

The coolest part of this charger is that it’s WiFi enabled. You can control it through an app, or even with your Amazon Alexa or your smart home. The app even sends you reminders, so you don’t forget to charge your vehicle. This really is the electric battery charger for the modern age. Furthermore, you can use the app to program the charger, so that it charges at non-peak hours, where you’ll save money on your electricity bill. Part of the allure of an electric vehicle is that it saves you money, so if you can save charging money on top of that? All the better!

The hardwiring in the device is durable, and safety rated to withstand the elements. Just install it in your garage (installation is pretty easy, but we recommend a professional), and you’re ready to go. It even has a 25-foot charging cord, so you can mount the charging station anywhere in your garage and still be good to go. If pairing your Bolt with a perfect battery charger is your goal, then look no further than this product.

Signature Car Cover

Your Chevy Bolt is an exciting, fun new car. Because of that, you probably want to keep it in the best condition possible. There are a lot of reasons for taking good care of your car: it makes the car look better, it’s more fun to own and drive the car, you save maintenance costs, and you increase resale value.

One of the best ways to help protect your car is with a good car cover. A good car cover protects your vehicle from all of the elements, which ensures that your car stays good and safe. This product from OxGord is one of our favorites, and using the car finding service on Amazon or OxGord’s website, you can find the exact cover size that’s right for the Bolt.

This car cover is complex, which is a good thing. It features three layers of spunbond polypropylene, one layer of micro-porous film, and one layer of soft fleece. The result is a product that is highly water-resistant, no matter how hard it rains. Despite being water-resistant, the product is breathable, which means you can leave it on your Bolt for long periods of time without worrying about condensation or mildew occuring. The elastic seams and drawstring ensure that you can create a snug fit, while the reinforced seams guarantee that the car cover stays strong and won’t rip, even when fitting tight.

This car cover folds up to a small size, and comes with a storage bag, so you can keep it in your car when not in use. That way you have it on you whenever you need it.

If you don’t have a garage, a car cover is a great way to make sure that your car stay protected from harsh sun, strong wind, dirty air, and rainfall. It’s a great addition to anyone who wants to keep their Bolt in great shape.
